Newtown Square Restaurant Goes Smoke Free for 2005!

As of January 1, the Ale House at 3546 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, PA became 100% smoke free.

News of the restaurant’s impending smoke-free status was announced in an article that appeared in the December 29 issue of the  County Press. The article cited personal, moral, and business reasons as factors in the decision to become smoke free.

The Delaware County Tobacco-Free Coalition would like to congratulate the owners for protecting the health of their employees and customers.

Since September, 2001, over 14,000 Delaware County students, grades 4-8, have seen the tobacco prevention program, Speak for Yourself, which educates kids about tobacco advertising, health hazards, and addiction/cessation.

For the 2004-05 school year, 28 performances have been scheduled from September through April at schools throughout Delaware County. Currently, there is a waiting list for schools interested in booking a performance.

The following are some comments written by students after a performance:

Your show was great! I learned a lot about cigarettes yesterday. My mom and dad smoke so it’s hard for me. But I will promise you I’ll talk to them.

I hate smoke, it kills. My mom is on an oxygen machine because she smoked. My uncle died from lung cancer cause he smoked. I won’t ever hurt myself by smoking.

I think smoking is a horrible thing. I have watched a person (my grandfather) die from cancer after he quit smoking. It was not pretty. I hate smoking.

I think smoking is very bad for you but my parents won’t stop. So I don’t talk bad about smoking because it hurts my family's feelings but I won’t SMOKE!!!

Dear Smokers: Don’t you realize that if you smoke you will get yellow teeth, smelly hair, black lungs, and bad breath! Smoking is really bad for you so try to stop smoking! When you go to the market, you’ll see cigarettes, don’t buy them! Now, I hope you’ve learned, don’t smoke. You will live longer!
