of high school seniors report lifetime use and 22% reported
use in the past month.

Marijuana has been the primary substance of
abuse identified at
treatment entry and mentioned in emergency room admission and
autopsy reports among 12 to 17 year olds.

Frequent marijuana use is associated with a
syndrome
characterized by apathy (laziness), decreased attention span, poor
judgment, inability to carry out long-term plans, social
withdrawal,
and a preoccupation with acquiring marijuana.
•
Marijuana use is also associated with
co-occurring problems,
including alcohol use, depression, anxiety, attention
deficit/hyperactivity, conduct disorder, illegal activity,
high-risk
sexual activity, unwanted pregnancies and difficulties at school
and
home.

Early intervention and treatment for marijuana abuse and dependency can be very effective.
Delaware County adolescent substance abuse providers have created programs to help adolescents and families deal directly with the issue of marijuana use; programs determine abuse versus addiction and evaluate adolescents to determine the appropriate level of treatment.

more of these have been true in the last 12 months, marijuana treatment is
needed.
Regular use of
marijuana.
Observable behavioral
changes related to marijuana use (i.e.,
dropping grades, lack of motivation, absenteeism at
school, increased
apathy or irritation, depressed mood).
Increased
preoccupation with marijuana use and an increasing
tendency to associate only with other marijuana users.
Avoiding social and
recreational activities where marijuana is not
present.
An arrest or school
suspension related to marijuana use/possession.
Continued marijuana
use following a significant intervention such as
an arrest or school disciplinary action (i.e. a
positive urine screen for
marijuana while on probation).
